Create A Dreamcatcher With Children

Dream catchers are a Native American tradition.

The dream catcher is a Native American tradition that is hung above the place where a person sleeps. It is intended to "catch" bad dreams and let the positive ones flow through to the sleeping person. While genuine dream catchers are made of willow, you can make a simple version of the dream catcher for a fun craft with children, while teaching them something about Native American culture.

Instructions

1. Cut the center out of a paper plate. Leave about 2 inches around the edge.

2. Punch holes in the paper plate rim about 1/2 inch apart.

3. Cut a 5- to 6-foot piece of yarn. Tie one end of the yarn through a hole in the paper plate.

4. Loop the yarn through the other holes in the plate, in any order. You can make interesting designs by weaving the yarn through holes directly across from each other or holes that are only a few inches away from each other.

5. Add beads. As you weave the yarn, place beads on the yarn and continue looping through the punched holes.

6. Tie off the yarn. Once you run out of yarn, tie a knot at the last hole it reaches.

7. Punch three holes at the bottom of the plate.

8. Cut three pieces of yarn about 5 inches long. Tie each piece to one of the holes at the bottom of the dream catcher.

9. Place beads and feathers on the hanging string.

10. Decorate the edge of the plate with markers.
