Make An Old-fashioned Linen Pillow Cover

Working with antique fabrics is much the same as sewing with modern fabrics except that more care must be exercised if the fabric is delicate. For very old fabric, hand sewing is recommended. Most linen is relatively durable despite the age and will hold up well under a sewing machine. Sewing an antique linen pillow cover is a project that can recycle antique linen, either plain or embellished with needlework, and is a lovely sewing project to undertake.

Instructions

1. Measure the pillow to be covered. Add 2 inches to the width measurement. Add 2 inches to the length measurement. If the pillow is circular, add 2 inches to the diameter. These are the adjusted measurements for the project.

2. Cut the antique linen and muslin or antique linen backing, right sides of the fabric touching, according to the pillow's adjusted measurements. Pin the edges of the pillow cover.

3. Sew, using the straight stitch and a 1-inch seam allowance, the edges of the pillow cover, leaving one side open and unsewn in order to insert the pillow through. Remove pins.

4. Turn the pillow cover right side out. Insert the pillow into the cover through the opening.

5. Fold the raw edges of the antique linen inside against the wrong sides of the fabric and pin.

6. Pin both edges together and hand sew closed, removing the pins as sewing progresses.
