Draw A Cartoon Parakeet

Photographs of actual parakeets help to guide your cartoon concept.

Drawing a cartoon of a parakeet is not a difficult task, no matter the level of experience you may have. Use pictures of parakeets to help you create a rough draft, but use your own creativity to really animate your cartoon. Be patient as you work through each section of the parakeet, as a steady hand will improve the quality of your drawing.

Instructions

1. Draw a circle somewhere in the upper half of the page to represent the parakeet's head. If you need help creating this circle, use the bottom of a can or other circular object to help you.

2. Sketch a narrow oval, slightly angled, underneath the head of the bird to reflect the basic shape of the body. Use light pencil strokes, as this is just a guideline and will eventually be erased. Draw two lines below this body to act as the basis for the parakeet's legs.

3. Draw two large circles inside upper part of the bird's head to represent the eyes. Because you are drawing a cartoon rendition of this particular animal, the eyes can be as exaggerated as you wish them to be. Add eyebrows above the eyes to evoke emotion in the parakeet's face.

4. Sketch a small beak below the eyes of the parakeet. Shape the beak as realistically as possible, but have the bird appear to be smiling or frowning to further animate this animal. Add rigid lines to the outline and interior of the parakeet's head to give it a feathered appearance.

5. Add the basic shape to the wing of the parakeet by drawing a large curved line to indicate the bend in this body part. Draw rigid lines down the length of the wing and sketch light lines to the bird's chest to show feathers.

6. Add the basic shape of the tail using a long, slender oval that connects to the rear of the bird's body. Create long strokes at the base of the tail to show feathers. Move to the feet of the parakeet and sketch the individual toes. If you wish for the animal to look extremely cartoonish, make the feet an exaggerated reflection of the realistic portrayal.

7. Trace all of the intended pencil lines with an ink pen, avoiding the guidelines you used to create this drawing. Move the pen slowly over each line, being careful not to smear any of the ink during this process. Let the ink dry, then completely erase any remaining pencil marks.
