Native American Family Crafts

Dream-catchers are among the most well-recognized Native American crafts.

One important way we learn about cultures is through their art. Native American culture is no different. From headdresses to dream-catchers and more, ornate Native American art often carries stories and tradition. To introduce children to Native American culture, simple Native American crafts can be an ideal first step.

Dolls, Tepees

Younger children, with the help of family members, might enjoy making Native American crafts like tepees using brown grocery bags, twigs, yarn and tape. A Kachina doll that is traditionally carved from wood, can be made using an empty toilet paper tube by adding a Styrofoam ball to the top of the tube and cutting slits in the bottom to give the appearance of legs. The child can then decorate the tube and ball to resemble a Kachina doll.

Dream-Catchers

Dream-catchers are a popular Native American craft. They are thought to allow good dreams to pass through and down to the person sleeping, while any bad dreams are tangled in the dream-catcher's web. A traditional dream-catcher is made from a hoop or ring; a web is then created with hemp or string across the hoop. Pieces of hemp or string are hot-glued to the sides of the dream-catcher and hang down. Beads are threaded onto the string and feathers can be added.
