The motherboard is the interior part of the computer that is essentially the laptop's main brain. Although a malfunctioning laptop motherboard may seem like a lost cause to a laptop owner, there are ways to fix motherboards without needing to pay professionals hundreds of dollars to repair them. One of the most sure signs that the motherboard needs repair is if the power button on the laptop is pressed, but nothing happens.
Instructions
1. Shut down the computer if it is not already shut down. Even if the computer is turned off, make sure that the power cord is also unplugged from the laptop.
2. Remove the side panel. The side panel is often held in place with a few screws. Simply unscrew the screws and pull firmly on the panel outward to remove it.
3. Touch a piece of metal somewhere other than the computer. Motherboards are very susceptible to static charges. Any kind of static shock could make the motherboard malfunction even more seriously. Make sure you have no static on you before you start to work on the interior of the computer.
4. Find the large plug that connects the motherboard to the power supply unit. This plug is hard to miss. It likely has either 20 or 24 pins. Lightly tug on and then push the plug back into place simply to make sure the connection is tight.
5. Check other plugs to make sure they are also tight. Any loose plug could inhibit the amount of power the motherboard receives. Also check to see how the RAM sticks have been inserted. The sticks should be snugly connected with little or no wiggle. If there is a wiggle, make sure the tabs are fastened.
6. Place the side panel back where it belongs, and secure it with screws. Plug the laptop in and press the power button. There is a good chance that your motherboard will now be functioning properly and the power button will work.
