A crow.
Crows are medium-sized birds with jet black feathers and long, narrow, pointed beaks. Illustrating a crow requires precision, and you may have to practice the features before you get it just right. It is essential you shade the bird well so its features are visible. The bird's dark color may make it difficult to distinguish features without skillful shading.
Instructions
1. Draw a small circle to create the bird's head. Draw two parallel, diagonal lines radiating down and away from the head. Begin one line at the bottom of the circle. Begin the other line in the upper right of the circle. Join the two lines in a curve. This is the bird's body.
2. Draw two short, curved, horizontal lines radiating to the left of the head. This will be the beak. Begin the first line on the top left of the circle. Curve the line down at the end. Begin the second line just below the previous line. Curve it up at the end to meet the other line. The lower line should be shorter than the higher line. Draw a horizontal line through the center to finish the beak.
3. Draw a long oval just below the head. The right side of the oval should run along the edge of the body. This is the wing.
4. Draw a short horizontal line that extends to the right. Begin the line in the upper right corner of the body. Use that line to draw a rounded rectangle. This is the tail.
5. Draw two sets of parallel, diagonal lines that run from the bottom of the body straight down. These are the legs. Angle the lines so they run to the right. Draw two more sets of parallel lines beginning at the ends of the previous lines. Angle them so they run to the right. Draw a slight fringe at the joints of both legs. Draw light, horizontal dashes across the lower portion of each leg to give them texture.
6. Draw four narrow, rounded rectangles at the base of each set of lines to create the toes. Add small, sharp talons to the end of each toe.
7. Shape a deep curve under the beak to create the neck. The curve should point toward the body of the bird. It should connect the beak to the chest. Add a little, dark circle in the center of the head to create an eye.
8. Add feather detail to the wing and tail. The feather shapes should resemble a football: ovals with pointed ends. Leave the top of each feather open. Draw light fringe around the edge of each feather.
9. Shade the bird to make it dark. Shade in the middle more than the outside of each feather or shape.
10. Erase any guide lines that are visible.
