Olympic Kid Games & Activities

Olympic games and activities give kids a chance to engage in friendly competition.

Kids may dream of one day competing in the Olympic Games, or simply enjoy watching the Summer and Winter Olympics on TV. To enhance their Olympic enjoyment, kids may compete in their own mini-Olympic Games and activities, whether mimicking traditional Olympic events or participating in various races and relays that earn them a "gold" medal.

'Balloon Between the Knee Race'

After placing an inflated balloon between their knees, kids hop or run to the finish line, with the kid crossing the finish line first winning. As a variation, kids may compete in teams, with each one racing to the finish line and racing back to the start line to tag the next kid in line. The team that finishes the relay first wins.

'Birdie Feather Race'

For the "Birdie Feather Race," kids remove their shoes and socks, tuck a feather between two toes on each foot and head for the finish line. Kids who lose a feather must return to the start line and try again. The kid reaching the finish line first wins. As a variation, kids may compete in teams, racing to the finish line and back to the start line to tag the next player. The team that finishes the relay first wins.

'Discus Throw'

Using two heavy foam plates taped together as a "discus," kids take turns throwing the "discus" from their waist, like a flying disk. A leader records the distance each "discus" goes, with the kid scoring the longest distance winning.

'Egg-A-Thon Race/Relay'

Holding a plastic Easter egg with a plastic spoon, kids walk as fast as possible to the finish line. Kids who drop an egg must return to the start line and try again. The kid reaching the finish line first wins. As a variation, kids may compete in teams, racing to the finish line and back to the start line, transferring the egg to the next player. The team completing the relay first wins.

'Hammer Throw'

For "Hammer Throw," kids hold the end of a 12-inch string tied to a newspaper-filled paper bag. Proceeding to spin around three times, kids release the bag. The leader records each "hammer's" distance, with the kid throwing his "hammer" the farthest winning.

'Javelin Throw'

Using four straws taped together from end to end as a "javelin," kids get five turns to throw the "javelin" into a wastepaper basket located 5 feet from a starting line. The kid with the most successful throws into the basket wins.

'Olympic Ring Hoop Loop'

Kids try landing the five Olympic "rings" around a 2-liter plastic bottle. Using crepe paper, ribbon or tissue, a leader covers, tapes or wraps embroidery hoops in each Olympic ring color--black, blue, green, red and yellow. Standing 3 or 4 feet from the bottle, the kid who tosses and loops all five hoops (or the most among the group) around the bottle wins.

'100-Inch Dash'

After measuring 100 inches on the floor, a leader marks a start and finish line with tape. On the leader's signal, kids start moving their feet 1 inch at a time. The kid who crosses the finish line first wins.

'Shot-Put For Distance'

Holding an aluminum foil "ball" in the palm of one hand, kids take turns pushing the shot into the air without moving their feet. A leader records the distance of each kid's throw, with the kid throwing the ball the farthest winning.

'Snowball Ring Toss'

Using marshmallows as snowballs, kids try landing a "snowball" in each of the 5 Olympic rings, located a few feet away. To make the rings, a leader loops 5 pipe cleaners (blue, black, red, yellow and green) into a circle and twists the 2 ends together. The kid landing one "snowball" in each ring wins.
