Sweet 16 Masquerade Party Ideas

Remind guests to wear a mask at the masquerade party.

A masquerade ball is usually seen as an upscale type of party, which makes it the perfect choice for a sweet 16 party. Your teen wants an event that her friends will remember, as well as one that she will remember. Guests come in fancy dress, with masks already in place. Figuring out who is behind each mask is just part of the allure. Sweet 16 masquerade party ideas should include every detail of the party planning.

Use Invitations as Reminders

Though your teen will likely tell her friends about the masquerade ball, use your invitations to remind guests and inform them of what's expected. If you decide ahead of time on a fancy dress party, write on each invitation that formal wear is expected. Take the time to remind guests that they're expected to wear masks and have the masks on before they enter the party. You may want to keep a few cheap masks on hand for those guests who couldn't locate one beforehand. Make the invitations fit the theme by using invitations shaped like masks. Alternatively, use cheap masks decorated with feathers and beading. Write the details of the party on the back of each mask and use these as the invitations.

Elegant Decorating

Decorate the inside of your house to look like an elegant ballroom. Use pieces of satin or another soft material as the coverings on the tables. Arrange top hats as the centerpieces on the tables by turning the hats upside down and filling them with fresh flowers. Buy cheap masks, decorate them with glitter, beads, feathers and other items, and hang them from the walls. Add a small amount of glitter to each table. It will catch the light and look elegant. Turn the lights down low in the room, or use small candles, to keep with the mystery theme of the night.

The Food Makes the Difference

Serve food that works with the mysterious and elegant theme of a masquerade ball and doesn't detract from the night. Feeding the kids the same food they eat every day won't support the theme. Create a buffet table in one area of the room and set up chafing or serving dishes. Place small plates, napkins and toothpicks on the table, which will let the teens easily serve themselves. Make a second table of cold dishes, including cheeses, vegetables and fruit. Serve sparkling punch and sparkling cider in plastic wine glasses for that extra touch.
