Homemade Bird Costumes

Bird costumes can fun to make and fun to wear. You might have avoided bird costumes in the past because you thought they were too difficult to make. With limited resources and crafting abilities, you can create a bird costume that will be the envy of all and perhaps even help you win a costume contest.

Easy Bird Costume Idea

For this simple bird costume, you need a long-sleeve shirt, squares of felt in multiple colors and feather boas. Start by sewing one of the squares of felt to the seams on the inside of the arm and side of the shirt--this will be the base of the wing. With the remaining felt, cut out feather-shaped pieces. Hot glue these on in layers, on the front and back, to the felt squares you sewed to the shirt to create wings that expand when the arms are raised. Also, hot glue an oval of feathers on the front of the white shirt to add a bit of color and feathers to the front of the costume.

Next, sew portions of the feather boas around the collar, the cuffs and the bottom of the shirt to add a feathery look to the costume. For bottoms, sew the feather boa to the bottom of an old pair of pants to bring the look down to the feet. Finish the costume by taking the remainder of the boa and make a small feathered tail on the bottom of the seam on the back of the shirt.

Simple Bird Costume

For the base of the costume, you will need a brightly colored sweat suit and colorful feathers, which can be purchased from a craft store. If feather boas are on sale, cut these up and make them work, too. Last, you will need a spray adhesive.

Lay the sweat suit on a flat surface and spray it with the spray adhesive. Quickly cover the area you sprayed with the feathers. It's best to work with one portion of the garment at a time so the adhesive doesn't dry before you can cover with feathers. Do the front and back and allow to hang until completely dry. Paint your face or pin a few feathers in your hair to complete the costume.

Creating Bird Feet

Simply slide a pair of yellow dish gloves over your shoes. This instantly creates the look of bird feet.
