Use marabou feathers to tie enticing jigs.
Marabou feathers are commonly used as a component when making jigs. Marabou feathers are fluffy and dance with the current in the water. The motion of the feathers adds a realistic and enticing effect to lures such as jigs. Although jigs tied with marabou feathers are readily available for purchase, tying marabou jigs at home allows for the creation of custom lures based on personal preference and fishing conditions.
Instructions
1. Place a jig head hook in the jaws of a fly-tying vise. Position the bend of the jig hook in the jaws of the vise with the shank on top and the point on the bottom.
2. Place a small drop of head cement on the shank at the base of the jig head to hold the thread in place. Wrap the shank of the hook with fly-tying thread. Begin forming the wraps just below the jig head and work down the shank 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch. Wrap the thread back up to the base of the jig head.
3. Cut a marabou feather with a pair of scissors. Hold the feather at the base or thicker part of the quill and smooth the feather downward.
4. Place the marabou feather on the shank of the hook. Position the feather so the fine ends of the feather extend beyond the bend.
5. Tie the feather in place with several turns of thread. Cut any of the marabou feather extending up toward the jig head with a sharp pair of scissors.
6. Cut another marabou feather with scissors, smooth it with your fingers and place it on the shank of the hook. Secure the feather with thread wraps and trim the feather with scissors. Add another marabou feather in a matching or contrasting colored, if desired, until the entire shank of the hook is covered with feathers.
7. Finish the mrabou jig by wrapping the feathers 1/4 inch down from the jig head with several layers of thread. Tie the thread off securely, cut it free with scissors and apply a coat of head cement to help hold the thread and protect it from abrasion while fishing.
