Make Costumes With Rubber Masks

Use a rubber mask to inspire and create your costume.

A rubber mask is one costume accessory that allows the wearer to hide his face and become another person, animal or thing for the night. These often realistic masks come in a variety of shapes and themes, including famous politicians, celebrities, fictional characters, animals and aliens. Once you have a rubber mask, create a costume around the item by matching apparel, accessories and makeup to the mask.

Instructions

1. Look at your rubber mask to decide what kind of costume you can create with it. For example, if the mask is shaped like a famous politician's head or a rabbit's face, you could wear it to look like that person or animal. You also could use the mask to exhibit more unique ideas. For example, a wolf mask can be worn with a woolly costume to be a wolf in sheep's clothing. Or wear a scary clown mask paired with a nurse's outfit to create one bizarre costume no one has ever seen.

2. Match the mask with apparel. For people costumes, wear the appropriate clothing to match the character being replicated. For example, politicians should be dressed in suits with red or blue ties and patriotic pins. Animal rubber masks can be paired with clothing that looks like the creature's fur, feathers or scales. Glue glitter on a glossy leotard to create a lizard skin to match the reptile's mask or blue cotton balls on a white sweatsuit to create a sheep's fleece.

3. Accessorize the costume and mask. Find a hat or headpiece to match the rubber mask if it will add to the costume. Add a cone-shaped party hat to a clown mask to increase its creepiness, or wear a sweatshirt hood over a serial killer mask. Include any props your character might use, such as a plastic knife for a killer, stethoscope for a doctor and bags of loot for a robber.

4. Use makeup to better blend the mask to your skin. Find body paint that's close to the color of the mask near its neck area. Apply it on your skin from where the mask ends down under the first inch or two of your shirt or top.
