Feather Tree Instructions

Feather trees come in a variety of styles, from cone shaped to tree shaped. They can be small enough to serve as a table centerpiece, or can be large enough to stand on their own as part of the room's decor. Feather trees can be green, like a Christmas tree, or in any color desired. They are made from a variety of feathers too. For a simple method, use marabou boas.

Making the Tree

For a natural tree shape, cut off a branch the desired size. Choose a branch with many smaller branches. Strip the branch of leaves and of rough bark. Some sanding may be necessary. Make sure the branch is clean, dry and free of insects. For a more traditional feather tree, make the tree from dowel rods. Choose a thicker one (at least 1/2 inch in diameter) for the trunk, then use smaller dowel rods for branches. (Or use sturdy floral wire.) Drill holes in various directions through the trunk dowel and insert the smaller branch dowels, cutting each to the desired length. Secure the branches with wood glue, or thread the floral wire through the holes and wrap and shape the branches.

Building a Base

A simple square block cut off a 1-by-6-inch board will make a sturdy base for most feather trees. If you cut off a large or heavy branch, you may need a much more substantial block. Center the tree branch or dowel rod over the block and nail it to the block. Drive the nail up from underneath the block into the branch or dowel rod. Or consider using craft resin in a pot and positioning the branch or dowel rod in the center of the pot. Make sure the resin has completely hardened before adding on feathers.

Feather Covering

Start with the lower branches on the tree. Smear glue along the length of the branch you want covered with feathers. Then, starting at the base of the branch (at the trunk end) wrap a marabou boa around the branch, along the length of the branch, completely covering the branch with the feathers. Cut off the unused portion of the boa when you reach the end of the branch. Proceed to the next branch. The number of boas required will depend on the size of the tree.
