Identify My Palm Tree

Palm trees are commonly used to decorate landscapes.

Palm trees are tropical plants with specialized roots and thin trunks. Aside from these features, palms are as different as any other family of plants. In fact, even in the banana palm family alone there are trees as tall as three-story buildings and as short as 2 feet. Identifying your palm tree is as simple as eliminating as many different characteristics as possible.

Instructions

1. Determine whether your palm tree is clumping or subterranean. These are the two types of tree and root systems. A clumping palm tree is tall, as most of the growth forms above the ground, adding an extra palm level yearly. A subterranean palm tree is short and has the bulk of its tree underground. If your palm tree is especially tall, it is most likely a California palm.

2. Observe the leaves on your palm tree. The two common types of leaves are fans and feathers. The fan leaves are like the leaves you see in old movies where a servant is fanning his master with the palm branch. The feather leaves look like little tufts and are usually a little more brown in color.

3. Look at the trunk. There are three different types of palm trunks: smooth, spiked and stacked. The smooth trunks have no old leaves and look like a smooth bark. The spiked tree trunks have large spines that help the tree support itself. The stacked trunks, which are the most common, have layers of old leaves, or if well trimmed, old leaf bases.

4. Check your tree in the summer for fruit. Palms can either produce dates, nuts, bananas or nothing. While not all fruit is edible, it does help in eliminating some of the options. If the tree does not produce any fruit, then it is most likely a hybrid tree.
