Decorate your dollhouse with furniture in a variety of styles.
In an interview with "The New York Times," miniature furniture collector and maker Christy Schmidt describes mini furniture as existing at the intersection of interior design and crafting. Whether you plan to put it in your dollhouse or in a display case, you can find miniature furniture in rough, homemade styles from amateur crafters and more precise works by exacting professional designers. From period-inspired replicas to materials-based designs, the field of miniature furniture encompasses designs in many different historic and original styles.
Rustic
Miniature furniture in the rustic style has a folksy amateurism and country charm that fits well in older dollhouses. Rustic furniture is often made of unplaned wood, or twigs and small branches with the bark intact. The builder cuts these unplaned pieces into furniture arms and legs. You can achieve rounded shapes like chair backs by layering longer twigs and curving them together in a rainbow configuration.
Art Nouveau
Miniature furniture in the Art Nouveau style, including tables, chairs, and night stands, features asymmetrical shapes, curved lines and ornate decorative elements inspired by flora and the natural world as a whole. According to Cornell professor Charlotte Jirousek, Art Nouveau designers found inspiration in everything from flowers, grasses, and vines to peacock feathers and butterflies. Understandably, the intricate nature of Art Nouveau design makes building your own tiny versions difficult and purchasing premade miniatures potentially expensive.
Modern
Some miniature furniture makers turn to the clean lines and geometric silhouettes of modern furniture -- from the works of Eames to Le Corbusier -- for inspiration, using the latest materials and equipment. Miniature furniture in the modern style includes scale replicas of modern classics by famous designers and any furniture inspired by the modern school of thought.
Contemporary
Contemporary style miniature furniture runs the gamut from tiny reproductions of the latest offerings at your nearest IKEA showroom to scaled down furnishings inspired by the latest luxury brands.
Materials-Based
Materials-based miniature furniture designs are unified by a common formal approach. The crafter or designer challenges herself by limiting herself to a single material, such as an everyday object, and then experiments within the restraints that the material presents. Potential materials for this style of miniature furniture include toothpicks, modeling clay, LEGO, origami paper and playing cards.
