Make An Easel For Any Toddler

You can make a child's easel using household materials.

As your toddler begins to grow and express himself, you might want to give him a designated area where he can unleash his creativity. Making an easel for your toddler will not only save your wallpaper, it is also cheaper than buying one ready-made. You don't need any special equipment beyond regular household tools. Since this easel is customizable, you can hang storage pots from it or decorate it in other ways when it isn't in use by your budding artist.

Instructions

1. Drill the 6 mm holes in the legs in preparation for assembly. Each front leg needs two holes, positioned 5 cm and 60 cm from the top. The rear leg needs one hole positioned 40 cm from the bottom of the plank. The front vertical piece needs four holes, one 10 cm from the top, another 20 cm from the top, the third 44 cm from the top and the last 5 cm from the bottom. The front horizontal piece needs three holes: one 10 cm from the top, the second 20 cm below that and the third another 20 cm below the second.

2. Drill four holes in the top piece, three along the top and one on the bottom. The first top hole needs to be 6 cm from the vertical edge and 2 cm deep, while the two other holes need to be drilled 9 cm along from the first. The bottom hole needs to be level with the middle top hole and also 2 cm deep.

3. Lay the top piece on the ground. Take the two front legs and the front vertical piece and align the holes at the top of the three planks with the holes on the top of the front piece. The two front legs need to go either side of the vertical piece.

4. Secure the legs to the top piece using the carriage pieces, nuts and washers. Do not tighten them all the way yet, just tighten them as far as you can manually.

5. Place the front horizontal piece over the middle of the front legs and front vertical piece in alignment with the three drill holes. Tighten the nuts and washers manually before turning the structure over and tightening the nuts properly with a spanner.

6. Fasten a hinge to the top of the rear leg using the drill if necessary. Attach the other end to the underside of the top piece, just behind the front vertical piece. Attach the hinge using the wood screws. Once the leg is attached, you should have a moveable support for your easel. This will allow you to adjust the height and angle for your child.

7. Place containers for pens, paints, chalk and pencils on the frame. You can either screw these onto the front horizontal piece or balance them on top. You can also try attaching clips to the frame to support your toddler's work.
