Create A Poultry Bow For The Hair

Use ribbon to make a playful Thanksgiving accessory.

With Thanksgiving is right around the corner, it's an opportunity make a holiday-themed bow for a girl to wear in her hair. Cut, loop and wrap grosgrain ribbon into different shapes that come together to make a festive turkey bow fit for any little princess. Clip it onto a plain headband so a even a hairless newborn can sport an adorable accessory.

Instructions

1. Cut two 3 1/2-inch strips of red, yellow and orange ribbon. Cut six 3-inch strips of brown ribbon. Cut a small triangle or orange ribbon for the turkey's beak no larger than a 1/4-inch square. Cut a 1/2-inch strip of 1/8-inch grosgrain ribbon. Heat both ends of each piece of ribbon for a second with a lighter to seal them.

2. Wrap four brown strips of ribbon around a 3/8-inch wooden dowel. Hot glue the ends together and trim any excess ribbon. Wrap the other two strips of brown ribbon around a 1/2-inch dowel. Hot glue the ends together and trim any excess ribbon. Slide the circles of ribbon off the dowels once the glue has cooled a couple of minutes.

3. Make loops from two of the red and orange strips and one of the yellow strips of ribbon. Bring the ends of the ribbon around and together. Adhere them to each other with a dot of hot glue to complete the loops.

4. Hot glue the ends of the red, orange and yellow loops together with dots of hot glue to make the turkey's tail. Put the yellow ribbon in the center and the orange and red on either side.

5. Place one 3/8-inch loop of brown ribbon on either side of one 1/2-inch loop of brown ribbon. You have two sets of three loops now. Tuck the glued side of each 3/8-inch ribbon inside its respective 1/2-inch ribbon ever so slightly and glue it in place. This forms two ribbon tunnels made up of three loops. One will serve as the head and the other as the body. Hot glue one tunnel on top of the other.

6. Hot glue the turkey tail to the back of the head. Hot glue the craft eyes, orange triangular beak and 1/8-inch wide red ribbon to the front to make up the turkey's face.

7. Wrap the alligator clip with the second piece of yellow ribbon by placing a small dot of hot glue on the bottom of the clip on the hinge end. Place one end of the ribbon in the glue. Wrap the ribbon over the hinged end of the clip. Run a line of glue along the top arm of the clip and wrap the ribbon along the top. Use a dot of glue on the inside of the top arm of the clip before wrapping the ribbon over the end of the top arm and placing it in the dot of glue.

8. Hot glue your ribbon turkey to the top of the clip with the bottom of the turkey at the hinged end.
