Parrot feather is an aquatic plant.
Parrot feather (and red-stemmed parrot feather) are aquatic perennials plants and are part of the water-milfoil family. These floating plants are used to decorate and provide oxygenation for outdoor aquatic gardens and koi ponds. Parrot feather plants were originally found in South America, but can now be found worldwide.
Parrot Feather Characteristics
Parrot feather has rigid stems that can protrude about 1 foot above the water's surface. Leaves are arranged in bunches of four to six. Rigid emergent leaves are bright blue-green. The leaves that remain submerged are reddish, feathered leaves with 20 to 30 segments per leaf. They appear to be decaying, but are not. The woody stems of the parrot feather can grow over 5 feet long. In the spring, pink-white flowers will develop.
Parrot Feather
Parrot feather, Myriophyllum aquaticum, is used in outdoor and indoor aquariums and is a popular aquatic garden plant. Native to the South American Amazon River area, parrot feather has been introduced around the world and can be found in warmer climates. The woody stem of the parrot feather can grow over 5 feet long and will often extend toward the bank or shore.
Red Stemmed Parrot Feather
The red-stemmed parrot feather, Myriophyllum brasiliensis, is a newer dwarf form of the regular parrot feather plant. Its red-stemmed foliage creates an interesting color contrast in outdoor ponds. The red stems can intensify with sun exposure.
