Make Wampanoag Hats

Make a child's Wampanoag headdress with just a few materials.

The Wampanoag tribe originated in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The Wampanoag helped the pilgrims to survive their first winter in Plymouth, and shared their corn and turkey with the Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving. Members of the tribe continue to live in Massachusetts and Rhode Island today. Wampanoag hats, or headdresses, consist of a band around the forehead decorated with beads and one or two feathers attached to the back. The Wampanoag sometimes even used peacock feathers or ostrich plumes that they acquired from trading. Chiefs wore their headdress feathers straight up to mark their high-ranking status.

Instructions

Make the Headdress

1. Measure your child's head. Cut a piece of corrugated cardboard 2 inches wide and as long as necessary to fit the head measurement. Cut a piece of white oak tag to fit the cardboard.

2. Draw a design on the oak tag with pencil. Make the design colorful using markers or crayons. Glue the oak tag to the cardboard. Fasten the ends of cardboard together with the glue, double-checking that it fits snugly on the child's head.

3. Push the quills of the feathers into the corrugated opening of the cardboard at the back of the headband. Set the feathers straight up for a chief's headdress or at an angle for other members of the tribe.
