Remove Flaking Fresh paint From The Deck

Flaking paint allows moisture penetration, which reduces deck life.

Flaking paint should be removed from a deck before repainting or the new paint will continue to peel. A paint scraper removes the bulk of the flaking paint while an orbital sander feathers out the remaining paint. If flaking paint isn't removed from the deck and a new coat is painted over it; the peeling will continue. When flaking paint is removed bare wood will be exposed. This wood will need to be primed before painting.

Instructions

1. Walk to one end of the deck and scrape the first board from end to end. Scape one board at a time. Hold the scraper so that the scraping edge is flat on the surfaces and then pull the blade with the grain of the wood to peel away the paint.

2. Slide the blade of a putty knife under large pieces of flaking paint to lift them up up off the deck. Use the side of the putty knife blade to scrape flaking paint from the sides of the deck boards.

3. Place a piece of 120-grit orbital sandpaper on the orbital sander. These usually fasten like Velcro. Turn the sander on and sand the edges where the flaking paint was removed. Feather these edges out until the deck board is smooth. Move the sander back and forth over the deck boards to speed up the sanding process.
