Raven Crafts

Craft a model of a raven.

Perhaps it's their all black appearance, or maybe it's their distinctive crow; whatever the reason, ravens have long been revered throughout various cultures -- as both foreboding omens and sacred symbols. Whether you are examining the symbolism of these birds, studying works of literature that focus on ravens or simply studying the characteristics of these birds, consider creating raven crafts as extension activities for your study.

Handprint Raven

Hand prints are the focal feature of this raven craft. Cut out an oval and a circle shape from construction paper. Glue the circle to the top of the oval -- the circle will serve as the head and the oval will serve as the body of a raven. Trace three hand prints -- two with fingers spread open and one with fingers pressed together -- onto black construction paper and cut them out. Affix the two hand prints with the fingers spread open to either side of the oval, creating wings for the raven. Glue the hand print with the fingers pressed together to the bottom of the oval, creating the raven's tail feathers. Cut a triangle from yellow construction paper and glue it to the head as a beak and complete the bird by gluing two googly eyes above the beak.

Paper Plate Raven

Use paper plates to create this raven craft. Paint or color a dinner- and dessert-sized paper plate black. Glue the dessert-sized plate to the top of the dinner-sized plate, forming the head and body of the bird. Cut another dinner-sized paper plate in half and paint or color it black. Glue the halves to either side of the body of the bird, creating wings. Glue yellow pipe cleaners to the bottom of the body for feet. Cut a triangle from yellow construction paper or craft foam and attach it to the head, forming a beak. Affix two googly eyes to the head and glue a few black feathers onto the top of the head.

Perched Raven Silhouette

Create the silhouette of a raven perched upon a branch. Print out an image of a raven's profile and cut it out. Trace the image onto a piece of black craft foam and cut it out. Find a twig or a small tree branch from outside and glue the raven silhouette to it. Create a flock of ravens by cutting out several different sized ravens from craft foam and glue them along the twig or branch.

Pom-Pom Raven

Craft pom-poms are used to create this raven craft. Glue two black craft pom-poms on top of one another, creating the head and body of a raven. Cut a small triangle from yellow craft foam and glue it to the middle of the head, creating a beak. Glue two small googly eyes to the head, just above the beak. Affix black feathers onto the sides of the body of the raven, creating wings for the bird.
