Keep Dust From Home

Feather dusters merely move the dust around to settle in a different place.

It seems that no matter how scrupulous you are with the dust cloth, another layer of dust crops up soon after you clean. Excess dust makes a home feel dirty and can trigger allergies, so it's a good idea to keep the problem under control. Precautions can be taken to keep the dust from accumulating so your home will feel cleaner and its air will be easier to breathe.

Instructions

1. Keep the filters in your heater and air conditioning unit clean and replace them when necessary. Check them every three months or more often if you have pets. Dirty filters can't filter the air efficiently, and the dust the filter can't handle ends up on your floors and furniture. Use filters specifically designed to trap even the smallest particles of dust.

2. Replace carpet with hardwood floors. Dust on wood floors is easier to see and the visual evidence is a reminder that the floors need cleaning.

3. Use a cloth specifically meant for dust removal when cleaning. Don't use a feather duster or a linty cloth. They only spread the dust around.

4. Shake out area rugs and vacuum carpets regularly. These are big collectors of dust; if not cleaned regularly, the dust embeds itself in the fibers and is difficult to remove. If your area rugs are small, frequently throw them in the dryer and give them a spin to remove dust.

5. Keep only a bare minimum of stuffed animals in your child's bedroom. A room full of these critters creates lots of dust. If you must keep them, store them in sealed boxes until playtime.

6. Use a dehumidifier to help control the population of dust mites in your home. Dust mites need an atmosphere of high humidity to thrive. Clean the dehumidifier often with a solution of 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water.

7. Wash your bedding frequently to cut down on the dust accumulation. Launder sheets with the hottest water available. Encase mattresses and pillows in zippered covers. When laundering your bedding, roll the sheets up to carry them to the washer to prevent the spread of dust.

8. Place heavy-duty floor mats outside all your entry doors, and encourage family members to use them. Shoes track lots of dust into your home, so cut the problem off at the door. Aim for mats with a rubber backing and a tight weave.
