Areas Of The Body Of The Crayfish

Body Parts of a Crayfish

The crayfish, cousin to the lobster, is a type of fish found in fresh water. The crayfish has specialized body parts that allow it to dig holes in the sand under the water. The crayfish then uses the holes to protects itself from extreme weather conditions. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Cephalothorax

The main body of the crayfish is comprised of two sections. The most forward segment is known as the cephalothorax, or thorax. This a hard section of the body to which the legs are attached.

Abdomen

The abdomen is the second segment that makes up the body of the crayfish. The uropod and telson, two appendages that aid the crayfish in swimming and moving, are attached to the end of the abdomen.

Legs

The crayfish has 10 legs. Its legs are used for walking, reproduction, eating and cleaning.

Swimmerets

Swimmerets are connected to the underside of the legs on a crayfish. They are small extensions that come out from each leg. Swimmerets are used to hold eggs and aid in swimming.

Gills

Crayfish are unique in the fact that they use gills to breathe, like fish, but also have ability to stay out of water for long periods of time. When they are out of water on humid days, they have the abilty to extract water from the atmosphere by using their gills.
