Kinds Of Crappie Jigs

Crappies are one of the most popular game fish in the country because they are plentiful, easy to catch and extremely good tasting. Fishing with live bait or fishing with jigs and other artificial lures are the methods used for catching these fish. The jig is a two-part lure. The main part is a hook with a weight molded to the hook and the body of the jig. The great thing with jigs is that the body can be quickly changed, which allows the angler to change tactics depending on the fish and the conditions. Jigs are one of the most cost-effective types of fishing lures on the market and they come in sizes and types that can be used in any fishing method.

Marabou Jigs

The marabou jig is a soft material shaped like a feather that is used for the body of the jig. The marabou jig is very effective because the natural movement of the jig as it is retrieved makes it irresistible to the fish. Marabou jigs can be found in many colors, but white and red seem to be two of the highest producing colors for crappie fishing. An effective way to set up a marabou jig is to make the jig head contrast the tail. For instance, if you use a white tail, attach it to a black head.

Rooster Tail Jigs

The rooster tail jig is a combination lure created by putting a spinner blade on the jig head and then adding a marabou or rooster tail. The spinning of the blade adds a flash to the marabou jig. The flashing of the spinning blades looks like the flash off the side of a feeding minnow, which causes a reactive strike from the crappie. A rooster tail jig is very effective for catching crappie since it imitates the minnow, one of the main food sources for crappie.

Plastic Jigs

Plastic jig bodies are becoming more popular because they are durable, effective and cheap. They come in an endless variety of types, colors and styles. Some of these plastic bodies imitate frogs, bugs, worms and other food sources. There are plastic worms that have curly tails in order to add motion to the lure as it is retrieved through the water. Some plastic jig bodies are infused with scents and tastes that further entice game fish to attack and try to eat the lure.
