The Very Best Linux Laptops

Back at the beginning of the computer age, a man named Linus Torvalds experimented with the dominant operating system of the day, which back then was Unix. Torvalds modified the key components of this operating system to make it faster and more stable. What he did next was even more incredible: He christened his new operating system Linux (Linus plus Unix) and released it to the world, free of charge, with the stipulation that others improve the software and do the same. Most laptops can be made to run Linux, and several companies have produced excellent laptops that run Linux out of the box.

Dell Inspiron 15n

Part of Dell's Inspiron line of computers, the 15n runs Ubuntu 9.10 out of the box, which makes Dell the first mainstream computer company to market Linux to regular PC users. It's hard to tell that the 15n is running Linux --- the Ubuntu distribution of Linux that the computer runs is so stable and seamlessly integrates with the software, making it seem like you're running a faster version of Windows that doesn't crash as often.

Asus Eee PC

The miniature Eee PC made a bit of buzz when it was released in 2007, eschewing high-powered processors and large hard drives for what is basically a souped-up smartphone with a larger screen and keyboard. Quietly running Linux, this machine is perfect for on-the-go Web browsing and word processing and serves as a great bridge between your smartphone and a full-size laptop, touting low weight and size while giving you full Web-browsing functionality.

EmperorLinux Raven X60 Tablet

With a combination of style, functionality and raw speed, the X60 is the clear winner among laptops that run Linux out of the box. The X60 gives high-end laptops from mainstream computer manufacturers a run for their money with a 2.2GHz processor that benchmarks at the same speed as Apple's MacBook Pro, ample hard-drive space, impressive graphics capability and a rotating removable screen that allows the unit to function as a laptop and a tablet PC. Add that to the flexibility and stability of Linux, and you've got yourself a machine that will crush your workload, functioning as a tablet and laptop with the processing power of a desktop.
