Create A Natural Headdress

Create natural headdresses with items from your backyard.

Natural headdresses provide an eco-friendly alternative to faux-flower fairy crowns and plastic tiaras that only gather dust. If your children love to play pretend, help them learn create headdresses perfect for every occasion. When the headdresses wither, place them in the compost for a lesson about renewable resources. Eco-friendly brides on a budget can also use natural headdresses in place of costly crystal bling. You and your bridesmaids can match at a much lower cost.

Instructions

1. Spread out your natural headdress materials. Flowers on the cusp of blooming and fresh leaves work best because they won't dry out or wither quickly.

2. Separate your materials into decorative bundles. Each bundle may be the same, or you may alternate bundle styles for visual interest. For instance, you might gather two small, blue feathers, a white carnation and two fresh laurel leaves together for one bundle and use just leaves and small feathers for another bundle. Leave the feathers out if you want your headdresses to be entirely compostable.

3. Snip 4-inch pieces of natural cotton or leather cord and wrap the stems of each of your bundles with them. Tie tight knots to keep the bundles together.

4. Lay one bundle in front of you with the stem end pointing right. Place another bundle in front of the first with the decorative part of the second bundle overlapping the stems of the first. Wrap and knot cord around both bundles.

5. Continue adding bundles to your headdress with cord until you have a line of bundles that wraps easily around your head. Bend the line into a circle and secure it with some tightly wrapped cord.
