A duvet adds warmth and softness to your bedding.
Today's well-dressed bed of often features a duvet, which is a comforter filled with feathers or synthetic material. People buy duvets for their warmth, lightness without bulk and inviting appearance. A duvet can have a cover attached to the comforter or the cover can be separate for easy removal. Bedding experts recommend buying the best-quality comforter you can afford, both for continued beauty and long life. When a duvet is coordinated with pillows, a bed skirt and bedding, it can make your bed the centerpiece of the bedroom.
Size
Duvets come in every size: small, single, double, queen, king-size and super king-size. The duvet should drape easily over the sides of the mattress. Usually the duvet and the mattress will be the same size, unless you prefer a duvet that spills over the sides. In that case buy one that is larger than your mattress.
Fillings
A duvet is filled with either natural or synthetic materials. Natural fillings of goose feathers or goose down are soft, light and warm. They plump up quickly when pressed. For the best value, choose duck feathers. For softness duck down is best. Goose down, the lightest, warmest filling, adds a touch of luxury to a duvet. Synthetic fillings are often made of polyester. Duvets with synthetic materials are as warm and soft as those filled with feathers or down. They are a good choice for people who are allergic to natural fillings or who wash their duvets often.
Warmth
Duvets are rated for warmth in togs, a unit that measures the amount of heat generated. Feather and goose-down duvets are measured both in togs and in fill power. This number, often called "loft," measures the comforter's warmth, the volume the filling occupies and its resilience. A lightweight duvet (3.0 to 4.5 togs) is good for the summer. Spring and autumn duvets are rated from 7.0 to 10.5 togs. Heavy winter-weight duvets are 12.0 to 13.5 togs.
Care
Proper care is important to prolong the life and beauty of your duvet. To fluff up a comforter, reach inside the cover, align the corners and hold them tightly while you shake the comforter to redistribute the filling. If the duvet is one piece, shake it on all sides. A synthetic duvet can be washed, while duvets with a natural filling should be cleaned professionally every five years. A duvet's filling cannot be removed without ruining the comforter. When well-cared for, a feather duvet should last for 10 years and a goose-down one for 25 years.
Children
If children use a full-sized duvet, it should be a lighter weight (4.5 to 9 togs). A full-size comforter traps more air and can be too warm for a child. Duvets are sold for cribs and cots. They should not be used by children under 12 months.
