Make Decorated Peacock Feather Pens

Decorate pens with brightly colored peacock feathers.

The brightly colored peacock feathers containing the blue "eye" are produced only by the male member of the peafowl family, the peacock. These birds shed their feathers just after the breeding season ends. Peacock feathers contain hues of golds, greens and blues that all shine brilliantly when exposed to light. These feathers can be incorporated into the theme of a wedding, birthday, anniversary or other special event. Make party favors for your guests by attaching peacock feathers to the ends of ball point pens.

Instructions

1. Select two peacock feathers that are roughly the same size. Look for feathers with the same coloring as well. Cut the feathers six to eight inches below their tops with a pair of scissors.

2. Lay the feathers down on a flat work surface. Flatten bottom 1/2- to 1-inch of the feathers' tips by smashing them with a hammer. Hold down the top of the feather with the palm of your hand to keep the feathers from rolling while you are flattening their ends.

3. Hold the flattened portion of one of the feathers against the top 1-inch of a ball point pen. Position the feather as desired and wrap floral tape around its stem and the pen. Place the second feather along the pen, on the opposite side of the first feather. Position the second feather so that it matches the position of the first feather. Wrap floral tape around the pen, over the stem of the second feather.

4. Wrap the floral tape repeatedly around the pen, working your way downward. Smooth the tape as you add it to ensure that it lays flat against the pen. Stop wrapping the floral tape where the tip of the pen begins. Cut or tear the floral tape and smooth the end against the pen's side.

5. Lay a plastic garbage sack over your work surface to protect it from the paint. Open a plastic zipper bag and slip the feathered end of the pen inside. Zip the bag closed on either side of the feathers. Make sure that the floral taped portion of the pen is outside the bag. Set the pen on top of the plastic garbage bag.

6. Shake a can of gold, green or blue spray paint to mix it. Spray the paint onto the taped portion of the pen. Hold the can 10 to 12 inches away from the pen when spraying. Let the pen sit until the paint is dry. Turn the pen over and spray the pen again. Remove the plastic zipper bag once the paint is dry.
