Keep The Home From Gathering Dust

Keep your house from collecting dust and spend less time with your duster.

House cleaning seems like a never-ending project -- something always needs to be done. One chore that needs constant attention is dusting. Dust on the furniture is one of the signs that we have fallen behind in our chores. In addition to aesthetics, dust removal aids in the treatment of allergies. Keeping your home from collecting dust keeps things looking better and helps your family stay healthy. Keep the dust out in the first place and save yourself precious time in your house cleaning.

Instructions

1. Buy good quality mats for your doors. Place one outside each exterior door and one inside. The mats keep dust out of your home, making this a great method to prevent dust from collecting and reducing your time spent cleaning. Remove your shoes when in the house to further reduce the possibility that your home will collect dust.

2. Choose blinds or shutters for your window treatments to keep dust from collecting. You will have to dust these -- look for blind dusters at your local discount store. Blinds and shutters are much easier to keep dust-free than curtains or drapes.

3. Select hard surfaces for your floors rather than carpet. Carpet is a major dust collector so use it sparingly in your home. Vacuum your carpets regularly, at least once a week, to prevent dust from collecting in your home. Clean your area rugs regularly.

4. Consider buying leather or vinyl furniture. Upholstered furniture collects dust. Vinyl or leather is much easier to clean. When cleaning the furniture, don't forget to vacuum or beat cushions and pillows. Toss them in the dryer for 20 minutes to kill dust mites.

5. Check your heating and A/C filters regularly and replace them as needed. Clean, good quality filters prevent dust from collecting in your home. Vacuuming the ducts to your system frequently also aids in the fight against dust.

6. Clean your closets and get rid of clutter. You should keep your closet clear enough that you can easily vacuum it. Sell, give away, or throw out things you no longer need or use. Cutting down on clutter reduces the places that dust can collect in your home.

7. Maintain your vacuum cleaner. If your vacuum uses a bag, change the bag when it is full and don't try to reuse bags. Otherwise, empty your vacuum as directed frequently. Keep wands clear of debris. Don't forget to dust the vacuum cleaner off when you are finished using it.
