Math activities
help students practice and learn math concepts.
Learning math can be a challenging activity for some children. Often, learning is best done through practice and repetition. Educational math activities, in the form of games, can be a good way to reinforce concepts, thinking skills, and problem-solving abilities. Math activities give kids a welcome break from worksheets and teach valuable math skills in the process.
Card Game
Reinforce addition, subtraction, multiplication or division skills with a simple card game. Divide students into groups of three or four. Choose the skill they'll be practicing. Pass out a set of playing cards to each group. Write on the board that jacks are worth 11, queens are worth 12, and kings are worth 13. For each round, call on one student to flip over two cards for the group to see. Whoever calls out the correct answer to the sum, product, difference, or quotient wins that round and keeps the card. The student with the most cards at the end of the deck wins.
Turkey Bingo
For young children who are learning number recognition, play a game of Turkey Bingo-a simpler version of the regular bingo game. Draw the outline of a turkey with ten feathers. In each of the feathers, write the numbers from zero to nine. Mix up the order of the numbers on each bingo card. Pass out the cards to the children along with ten pennies. Call each number and instruct the children to place a penny on it. The child who gets five pennies in a row first wins the game. Switch the cards around after each round. Students will practice counting skills.
Recipes
Use recipes to help students master fractions. Tell students to choose a recipe with at least five ingredients. They can search online or use a favorite recipe from home. Show students half, double, triple, and quadruple a recipe. Then have students do it with their recipes and show all of their work. Take turns presenting recipes to the class. Vote on the best recipe and make it together.
