Fresh paint A Raven Wing

Realistically paint a raven's wing.

Ravens, or crows, as they're often called, have dark black feathers that look blue under the light. Capturing the oil-slick quality of their coloring can be complicated, but with the right paint mix and brush stroke technique, you can paint a raven's wing with accuracy at any time you'd like.

Instructions

1. Mix your black and dark blue paints to make a black with a subtle blue sheen. Dip your brush into the paint to load the bristles.

2. Place the tip of your brush in the lower left section of your page and paint a line up to the upper right section in an angled lazy "S". This is the upper edge of the wing when fanned out.

3. Bring the brush back in, making a short finger feather, then paint out again making a longer finger feather. Then back again, then out for an even longer finger feather. Paint a series of feather points curving down and along the wing, building the mass of the wing.

4. Load your brush with more paint and fill in the body of the wing. Paint in a series of long "V's" to build up your internal feathers. You will now have a black wing completely filled in.

5. Mix together your black and blue paints with a little light blue to make your highlights. Paint in your highlights to add individual feathers and texture. Decide on where your light source is and add a thin light highlight to the edge of each major feather.

6. Allow the paint to completely dry before hanging or working on the wing any further. Paint the wing multiple times, adjusting the shape and size to get a feel of make different orientations of wings.
