Feather Shagged Hair

Creating a shagged, feathered look is a simple technique that requires some practice to perfect.

Feathering is a technique hairdressers use to add texture when creating the shagged hairstyle. The feathered look was made famous by Farrah Fawcett in the 1970s, when she sported a soft, long and layered cut. This technique creates a lightness, adding volume to hair while removing bulk from thick hair. Feathering is a technique that can be performed on any length of shagged or layered cut.

Instructions

1. Determine the angle you wish to achieve in the shag, such as a deep "V" or a gradual "V" with the point at the back of the head.

2. Comb a small section of hair and hold the hair at a vertical angle. Ensure that you hold the hair taut; do not relax your grasp.

3. Hold your scissors at a 90-degree angle, using them to make a forward, fanning motion through the hair as you cut this first section along the imagined line you seek to achieve.

4. Gather the next small section; a small amount of the previous section should be included to serve as a guide.

5. Move on to the next section, remaining diligent in maintaining your desired angle of cut and holding the section taut.

6. Take sections of hair from matching sections on either side of the head and hold up to measure, ensuring that you are cutting equal sections along each side of the head.

7. Once you are satisfied the hair is even, use the point-cutting technique to soften the edges and achieve the feathering. This is done by taking a small section of hair and snipping the very ends of the section of hair on an upwards angle by pointing your scissors towards the scalp.
