Make Top Hat Fascinators

Add a miniature top hat to ornament a fascinator.

Fascinators are exceptionally chic, but they often come with price tags that are as hefty as the accessory is stylish. Most fascinators are just elaborately decorated headbands or hair combs. You can create one yourself at home with supplies from a craft store. To construct a top hat fascinator, you need to seek a creative solution for adding a top hat to the piece, since a proper top hat is too large for this accessory. You can circumvent that problem easily, though, with an unlikely resource.

Instructions

1. Acquire a doll top hat that is 3 to 6 inches tall. Search wedding decoration supplies for a miniature hat.

2. Embellish the hat, if desired. Add a narrow ribbon band around the hat, a bow, a couple of small feathers or a small, rhinestone brooch to ornament the hat.

3. Measure the depth of the hat with a ruler. Add 2 1/2 inches to the depth measurement.

4. Cut a piece of heavy-gauge floral wire to the sum length with wire cutters.

5. Bend 1/2 inch of the wire to a right angle at one end. Shape the wire with needle-nose pliers if you can not bend it with your fingers.

6. Hold the wire against a rigid, fabric headband. Position it where you want the top hat to sit on the finished product. Wrap 2 inches of the wire around the headband tightly. Wrap the wire with the pliers, if needed.

7. Turn the headband upside down so that the underside of the band faces you.

8. Lay an 18-inch-by-9-inch piece of netting on your work surface. Position a long edge of the netting in the middle of band's underside. Apply a peppercorn-sized bead of hot glue on the netting, in the center of the band, to affix the pieces. The netting is so delicate and open that the glue will set around it, cool and secure it to the headband.

9. Arrange the netting on the underside of the band to make the veil. Apply beads of hot glue on top of the arranged veil to secure it. Do not place the veil within 2 inches the band's ends - the areas that sit behind your ears. You may need to gather the veil slightly as you glue it to fit the entire piece onto the band.

10. Cut a 14-inch piece of grosgrain ribbon that is the same color and width as the headband. For example, if you have a 1/2-inch-wide black headband, use 1/2-inch-wide black grosgrain.

11. Apply a bead of hot glue to the center underside of the headband. Press the center of the ribbon into the glue. Apply a line of glue across the underside. Press the ribbon into the glue to make a taut band of ribbon. The ribbon will keep the netting secured to the headband so that routine wear does not pull it free.

12. Trim the excess ribbon at each end of the band with scissors. Leave 1/2 inch of excess ribbon when you cut the material. Apply a bead of hot glue to the underside, just above each end of the band. Fold the 1/2-inch ribbon tab over. Secure it in the glue to make a small ribbon hem. The hem will keep the ribbon from fraying at the ends.

13. Apply a line of hot glue to the 1/2-inch bent section at the top end of the floral wire. Place the hat over the wire. Press it down to secure it in the glue.
