Feather Crafts For Children

Feathers are fun crafting materials for kids

Feathers are a versatile crafting material for kids of all ages to work with. They are soft, fun and colorful, making them interesting embellishments for a variety of crafts. Feathers come in a variety of sizes and can be natural or dyed. Avoid using collected feathers as they can harbor germs. When choosing a craft activity for children, be sure to keep age group, skill level and attention span in mind.

Hand Birds

Trace a child's hand to make an outline of a bird

A tracing of a child's hand with spread fingers makes the perfect template for a turkey or other bird. Have the child lay his hand down on a piece of cardboard and trace around all of his fingers. Cut the hand out of the cardboard and allow the child to decorate with paint, crayons or markers making a bird's eye on the thumb. Make a beak out of a small piece of yellow construction paper and glue it to the cardboard thumb. Let the child further embellish his bird by applying a thin coat of glue and feathers to the other four fingers and the "body" of the bird. Attach a wooden craft stick to the back of the cardboard bird make a stick puppet.

Paper Bag Puppets

Paper bag puppets are silly and creative playthings that are easy to make for almost any age group. Gather some lunch-sized paper bags and give one to each child. Have them decorate the folded bottom of the paper bag with googly eyes and a beak made from construction paper to form a bird's face. Decorate the rest of the bag with colorful feathers, markers, glitter, and other crafting materials. Kids can then put their hand in the bag and make their bird "talk."

Feather Flowers

Feather flowers are beautiful decorative crafts

Soft colorful feathers can resemble petals and naturally lend themselves to floral crafts. This craft is a little better for older children who can work with wire and florist's tape. Give each child a selection of feathers and instruct them to gather the feathers in a pattern and design that looks pleasing. Wrap the ends of the feathers with wire and cover with green florists tape to resemble a stem. Add a button as the center of the flower with hot glue. These flowers are eye-catching alone, or in an arrangement. They are nice gifts that kids can give to parents, friends or loved ones.
