Create A Veiled Hat

Veils add drama and elegance to a hat.

Different veiled hat styles were seen in the war period of the mid 1910s through the 1950s. Hats with veils were not only worn at weddings and funerals but made fashionable for everyday wear. These vintage hats can be recreated using various kinds of fabrics and hats, from silk chiffon and Russian netting to pillbox and cocktail hats.

Instructions

Short Birdcage Veil

1. Cut off a rectangular portion of the netting, long enough to drape from the back of the hat to below eye level. The width of the netting should stretch from ear to ear.

2. Stitch the left and right top corners of the veil to the center of the back of the pillbox hat, using the needle and thread.

3. Stitch the length between these two corners also onto the hat, along the same area as in Step 2.

4. Pin the flower brooch onto where the veil corners were stitched to the hat.

5. Pull the veil down over the top of the hat, spreading it evenly around the hat.

6. Attach feathers to the flower brooch as embellishment, using the glue gun.

Drapey Lace Trim Veil

7. Cut enough ribbon to wrap around the top of the wide-brimmed hat. Use any ribbon in the color and material of your choice.

8. Wrap the ribbon around the top of the hat. Tie its ends into a bow at the back of the hat.

9. Cut off a rectangular portion of the silk chiffon, long enough to drape from the back of the hat to shoulder or chest level. The width of the veil should circle the outer brim of the hat.

10. Stitch the lace trimming along the bottom and sides of the rectangular chiffon piece, using the sewing machine. Use any lace in the color of your choice.

11. Stitch the left and right top corners of the veil on top of the hat near the bow, using the thread and needle.

12. Stitch the rest of the top perimeter of the veil around the top of the hat, along the ribbon wrap.

13. Add any embellishments you want along the top rim of the hat, such as feathers or flower brooches.

14. Drape the veil down over your face, spreading it evenly around the hat.

Veiled Cocktail Hat

15. Cut out a rectangular portion of the netting, long enough to fall from the crown of your head to your chin. The width of the veil should stretch from ear to ear.

16. Stitch each top corner of the veil onto the sides of the cocktail hat or fascinator, using the thread and needle.

17.Stitch the length between the two top corners of the veil onto the front half of the hat.

18. Glue any embellishments you want such as crystal studs, pearls or feathers on top of the hat, using the glue gun.

19. Glue the cocktail hat onto either side of the hairband along its curve, using the glue gun.

20. Place the hairband on your head, once the hat has been glued completely dry onto the hairband.

21. Drop the veil down over your face, spreading it out evenly.
