Interior Painting Feather Technique

With the right techniques, feathers can create a beautiful faux finish.

Faux painting adds interest to any wall in your home. A faux finish can liven up a room and give it a sense of depth and rich texture. While you could always hire a professional to create the finish you desire, tackling the project yourself could be a rewarding process and can save you money. A striking faux finish can be attained with goose or turkey feathers and some latex paint.

Instructions

1. Lay down a drop cloth so the floor is protected from accidental spills and drips.

2. Apply a light base coat of paint using a roller. Allow to dry as recommended by the manufacturer. Apply another coat of paint if necessary. Allow to dry.

3. Select the colors you want to use with the feather texture. Choose one to three colors that are darker than your base coat for the best effect.

4. Practice pressing techniques on a paper bag before you attempt the designs on the wall.

5. Pour paint into the paint trays until they are filled about ½-inch deep. Run the tips of the feather over the paint tray so it is lightly coated. Avoid overloading the feather because the paint can weigh down the feather and create blotches on the wall instead of delicate lines.

6. Start at one end of the wall and work your way across applying the desired technique.

7. Make thin lines by gently dragging the feather over the wall in a diagonal or vertical motion.

8. Create curls or lines that swerve by twisting the feather as you drag.

9. Press the entire feather onto the wall to create feather imprints. Overlap the imprints to create patterns.

10. Alternate paint colors as you paint with the feather. Allow each coat to dry as recommended by the manufacturer before you go on to the next color.

11. When complete, blot the feather on a paper towel to remove excess paint.
