History
The feather mattress has been around since the fourteenth century and was originally made for the upper class as a sign of wealth. By the nineteenth century, commoners were saving their own feathers to make large, fluffy mattresses and pillows.
Modern
In modern times, feather mattresses are used over boxsprings and traditional mattresses for added comfort. Commercially made feather mattresses are only around 6 inches thick.
