Homemade feather bed pillows are fluffy, soft, and cheaper than those found in stores. They are surprisingly easy to construct and can last for up to 50 years, as long as the feathers do not become soiled and the pillows are properly cared for. Feather pillows have the ability to keep you warmer in winter and cooler in summer due to the natural insulation provided by feathers. They also make great gifts and can be a fun hobby for crafty people.
Instructions
1. Select a fabric for the pillows. A heavy ticking cotton fabric typically works best. This fabric is traditionally used to cover feather pillows due to its tight weave that prevents the feathers from working their way out.
2. Cut the fabric to the desired size of the pillow. Typically, pillows are 18 inches by 30 inches once they are complete, so leave 5 to 8 extra inches in addition to the desired size for the seam. Most pillows use two fabric panels, though you can use more for added layers if desired.
3. Place two pieces of fabric with the pattern sides towards each other and pin together.
4. Sew three edges of the pillow together using a basic stitch on your sewing machine or by hand. Start on a corner and sew all around until turning on the last corner, leaving one side open for stuffing the feathers. Remove the pins.
5. Turn the pillow case right side out, so the pattern sides face out.
6. Stuff the pillow with the feathers. To minimize waist, lightly pin the bag of feathers to the pillow case and shake the feathers in. Stuff it until the desired fullness of the pillow is acquired; some like thin pillows, others like thick and fluffy pillows.
7. Sew the opening end of the pillow closed. Consider double stitching for extra reinforcement.
8. Place the finished pillow in the sunshine for a few hours. This will air out the pillow and fluff up the feathers. Discard any excess feathers.
