Pinecone Crafts Ideas

Pinecones are great for arts and crafts projects because they can be used in a number of different ways and you can usually find them for free. There are many arts and crafts projects that pinecones can be applied to, especially for such holidays as Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, as well as other celebratory projects.

Pinecone Birdfeeder

Given their shape, pinecones make excellent birdfeeders, which in turn makes for an excellent crafts project. A pinecone birdfeeder takes only a few simple steps and can be built from supplies lying around the home --- string, peanut butter (or honey), birdseed and the pinecones. To create the pinecone birdfeeder, attach a loop of string to the top of the pinecone. This will be used to hang it outside once it is completed. Then spread either peanut butter over the outside of the pinecone or roll the pinecone in honey. The peanut butter or honey is used to adhere the birdseed. The pinecone can either be rolled in birdseed, or you can pour the birdseed onto it to coat the outside of the pinecone. After you coat the outside with birdseed, the pinecone birdfeeder is ready to be hung outside.

Pinecone Turkey Decoration

Pinecones can be used to create a fun Thanksgiving decoration or centerpiece. To create the turkey decoration, you will need pinecones, acorns (or a nut still in the shell), scissors, glue, googly eyes, clay, and brown, red, orange and yellow construction paper. The first step in the turkey craft is to cut out different color feathers using the construction paper and scissors. Two or three feathers in each color should do for one pinecone turkey. Next, use the clay to create a base for the pinecone turkey, pressing the cone into the clay so it lays on its side with the larger end of the pinecone towards the back. Once the base is attached, glue the cut out feathers to the petals near the back of the pinecone. While the glued feathers are drying, take the acorn or nut still in the shell and glue on the two eyes and a small piece of red construction paper for the turkey's "wattle." Give appropriate time for the glue to dry and then glue the acorn to the pinecone to create the turkey's head.

Pinecone Reindeer Ornament

There are many ideas for pinecone Christmas ornaments and decorations, one of which is the reindeer face ornament. Use pinecones, a red button brown pipe-cleaner, red ribbon, brown ribbon, craft googly eyes and craft glue or a glue gun for this project. Placing the pinecone on its side, first place and glue the red button in the middle of the pinecone to make a nose. Then take the two googly eyes and glue them to the pinecone petals above the nose. After the glue for the eyes and nose have dried, turn the pinecone to its back and bend the pipe-cleaner to make two antlers and branches for the antlers. Fasten the pipe-cleaner to the back of the pinecone so the antlers stick up over the top. Once finished, lay the pinecone down so you are facing the bottom. Take the red ribbon and tie a bow. Attach the bow to the bottom of the pinecone so it faces outwards like the eyes and nose. Finally, finish the reindeer ornament by making a loop out of the brown ribbon and attaching it to the back near the top. The brown loop will be used to hang the ornament or attach an ornament hanger.
