Painting With Down For Children

Kids can explore painting using feathers.

Painting is more than just an enjoyable activity to keep children entertained. Through painting, children are able to express their creativity, explore and gain an appreciation for art and hone their fine motor skills. While brushes are the traditional tools for painting, allowing children to paint in other ways offers them further creative exploration. Feathers are ideal alternatives to paintbrushes, as they are wispy and easily move paint around.

Instructions

1. Gather a collection of feathers to paint with. Craft stores sell feathers in a variety of sizes. Alternatively, take a nature walk and look for feathers to collect.

2. Cover the work surface with newspaper.

3. Fill bowls or paper plates with different colors of tempera paint. Set the bowls out on top of the newspaper and place several feathers next to each bowl of paint.

4. Provide children with artist paper or construction paper. Show children dip the feathers into the paint and move them about the surface of the paper as they would a paintbrush.

5. Encourage children to use several colors of paint and their creativity to make any type of painting they would like. Provide them with other tools to use for painting, such as cotton balls, cotton swabs, pinecones and leaves. Instruct children to dip these tools into the paint and paint with them, the same as they would a paintbrush or the feathers. Allow them to explore the different types of paintings they can make with the materials and encourage them to examine the different types of strokes each item makes.
