Make Feather Pens For Children

Make an exotic-looking pen using a peacock feather.

Making feather pens with kids can be a history lesson as well as a craft project. Explain to your child how feather pens allowed people to write long before ballpoint pens were created as you make the crafty writing utensil. Although young kids won't be able to cut the quill with a craft knife, they'll be able to choose their favorite type of feather and write with the finished product. Handmade feather pens also make creative gifts for the writers in your life.

Instructions

1. Choose a large feather, such as peacock or ostrich, at a craft store. Make sure that the feather has an eye-catching plume and a quill that is at least 10-inches long.

2. Trim the sides of the plume down with scissors to create a neat appearance.

3. Soak the quill in hot water for several minutes to soften it. Cut the bottom of the quill into a triangular-shaped point with a craft knife.

4. Push a sewing needle into the bottom of the quill gently to create an ink receptacle in the quill.

5. Dip the quill into a jar of washable ink to write with the feather pen.
