Create A Plumed Hat For Any Costume

Create your very own hat with a plume.

A hat provides a stunning way to top off a range of costumes, whether you are dressed as a glamorous Hollywood star, Southern belle or a Musketeer. Make a hat even more dramatic and fashionable by adding a plume or feather. This easy step gives a hat more color, texture and height, and helps transform an ordinary hat purchased at at craft store or thrift shop into a beautiful accessory for a costume.

Instructions

1. Select a hat to decorate. When picking a hat, consider the rest of your costume. For instance a hat with a large brim is ideal for a Southern belle costume while a smaller brimless hat is better suited for a flapper. Pick a hat that complements the color of your costume, too.

2. Purchase a large feather at a craft shop to use as the hat's main plume. When selecting a feather, pick one that complements the desired look and color scheme of the rest of the costume. You can choose an iridescent peacock feather or a fluffy ostrich plume.

3. Curl the feather to make it easier to add onto the hat. Pinch the spine or hard center of the feather with your thumbnails to break it on one side. Continue pinching down the length of the feather.

4. Determine the location on the side of the hat where you will add the feather. Add a small dab of hot glue at the bottom of the quill, then stick the feather onto the side of the hat near the brim or fold.

5. Shorter feathers spread around the brim add more color and texture to a plumed hat.

Glue on additional decorative feathers to the hat, too. Shorter feathers give the plume a fuller look. Add some biots, skinny single fiber feathers, to give some texture, as well as a fun look. Hackle feathers help fill in spots between other feathers.

6. Measure the circumference of the hat, then cut a piece of ribbon that is 2 inches longer. Wrap the ribbon around the brim of the hat so that it covers the base of the feathers and the glue, giving the hat a more finished look. Use a dab of hot glue or a pin to secure the ribbon.
