Create A Cheap & Easy Home Recording Studio Inside A Garage

Due to advances in technology, you need little more than a computer and sound card to have your own garage studio.

While it was once necessary to own a range of expensive audio equipment for home recording, digital music technology has made it possible to do more with much less. A budget of a few hundred dollars is still necessary to buy certain essentials, but as long as you own a computer and USB port, you can design an inexpensive and efficient home recording studio in your garage.

Instructions

1. Paint the walls of your garage with materials you get on sale or find around the basement. Sweep and mop the space, if there's no carpet on the floor. Hang shelves or cabinets for storage, near a table large enough for your computer and any other electronic equipment you may own.

2. Decorate the room around your work space with an old couch, a few chairs and a coffee table. Put a small refrigerator for cold drinks and snacks in a corner. Hang posters and curtains on the windows, until you feel like you're in a comfortable environment conducive to being creative. Go to your local music store and buy a basic sound card, the device that enables your computer to record and play back music.

3. Buy audio editing software so you have the capability to adjust the treble or bass, remove background hiss and fade out your songs. Purchase a low-priced microphone and cable to create vocal tracks for your compositions. Grab a feather duster from a discount store, to keep your studio garage equipment dust free.

4. Buy a cheap pair of headphones for quiet recording, as well as speakers that will allow you to listen to what you record afterward in the open air. Use power strips to plug the numerous equipment in. It won't hurt to have adaptors handy for collaborators, who may need to run other sound modules or instruments through your computer and USB port.
