Make Use Of A Poultry Caller

Using a turkey caller during hunting season is an effective way to help you locate a turkey. There are a wide range of turkey callers, and some hunters have learned to mimic the sounds turkeys make without the aid of a caller at all. However, for most hunters, it is easier and faster to use a turkey caller.

The two most common types of turkey caller are the box caller and the slate call, the latter of which is used primarily by beginning hunters.

Instructions

1. Use a box turkey caller. The sound is produced by pulling a wooden or aluminum lid across a wood or aluminum box. The benefit to aluminum box callers is that they can be used in the rain.

2. Use a slate caller. Drag a striker across a circular caller; most are made of slate, glass, aluminum or a combination of the three. Practice using the slate caller until you can imitate various turkey sounds, such as gobbling.

3. To make a yelp on a slate caller, make small circles with the striker. Make sharp, quick pulls across the slate with the striker to create a cluck. Make short, fast clucks to produce the cutting sound. Drag the striker slowly across the slate to create a purring sound.

4. Practice using your turkey caller before the hunting season starts. Producing a realistic turkey call is the most effective way to catch a turkey. Find turkey calling competitions in your area.
