Native American Junior High School Activities

Native American studies expose students to a different world view.

Students of middle school age benefit from a variety of activities that will increase their understanding of Native American culture while building skills in core subjects such as reading, writing and social studies. Many resources are available to help teachers develop hands-on activities such as games and crafts, and access the literature, music and history of Native American tribes.

Native American Literature

Many excellent books appropriate for middle school reading levels have been written by and about Native Americans. Choose three to five that are easily available in your community or from an on-line bookseller such as Amazon.com; have your students read their favorites, discuss in small groups, and prepare reports or reviews to present to the class.

Native American Games

Native American children played games of chance and skill that were developed to impart the life lessons of their culture. Most require very basic equipment that can be improvised; choices range from the elaborate and physically active to guessing games. Have your students research the cultural or mythological roots of a game so that they can glimpse the meaning the game would have had to a Native American child.

Native American Crafts

Native American craft projects such as bead work, mask making and the creation of totems and dream catchers offer another opportunity to participate hands-on in an activity that was part of a young native's everyday life. Research the crafts that were practiced by tribes in your geographic region and explore on-line image galleries for examples and ideas. Local craft supply stores may offer affordable bulk supplies of feathers, beads and leather remnants.

Native American History

Older middle school students have the skills to enjoy the study of Native American history through primary sources available from a number of on-line archives, such as first-hand accounts of events like Wounded Knee and the Trail of Tears. Reading may be supplemented with Native American music and artwork to appeal to students with different learning styles and achieve an in-depth understanding.
