Create A Flamingo From Debris

Debris flamingo

Any yard can be enhanced if you add a pink flamingo. Rather than traveling to Florida and swiping one off a lawn, you can make a flamingo from debris. There are many combinations of debris that will work for a flamingo, but you will be helped along greatly by four main pieces and some crafty steps.

Instructions

1. Get your debris. Gather four main pieces to make up your flamingo: the base, the body, sheet meal for the wings and tail, and a long, thin piece of wood or metal for the neck and head. A metal slat of fencing works for the neck and head. The wings can be cut out of sheet metal with snips. The base should be sturdy, thin and tall, such as the bottom of a barstool. The body needs to be a piece that will sit securely on the base and also support the neck and wings. A short, fat, cylindrical piece from machinery works well as the body.

2. Hook the wings to the body. Once you've cut your sheet metal into two side wings and longer feathers for the tail, attach them to the body part. The tips of the wings and tail can be bent around with pliers, wired, nailed or welded to the body part.

3. Connect the base. Secure the body part with its wings to the base. If your pieces are heavy enough and the top of the base flat enough, lying the body atop the base may be good enough. If not, weld, nail, wire or screw the body part to the base.

4. Add the neck and head. Take your long metal or wood slat and connect it to the body part. If your slat is hollow, insert a stake into it for added support. Wrap the stake with wire where you want it to be lodged and use the part of the stake that is sticking out to attach to the body. Attach the pieces with wire, a welder or nails.

5. Paint it. Use at least one shade of bright pink paint to make a base coat over your entire flamingo. Add contrast by dabbling another fun color, like bright blue, on the tips of the wings, around the base and up and down the neck area. Use white paint to create two eyes and black paint on the tip of the head for a beak and two dots in the eyes. Spray paint works best for the overall base; a brush works for the accents, beak and eyes.
