Make Bridal Hair Pins
Perhaps your inspiration to make your own bridal hair pin was Carrie's bridal peacock hair pin from from the "Sex in the City" movie or simply sticker shock from your local wedding boutique. Whatever the case may be, fear not. Making your own bridal hair pins is an easy way to add a personal touch to your wedding look. With minimal artistic ability and cash outlay, you can create a look that is truly unique. Add additional drama and savings by making a look for yourself and coordinating hair pieces for your entire wedding party.
Instructions
1. Determine the type of hairstyle you will wear with your bridal hair pins. Hair pins can be made from small or large bobby pins for a more delicate look where just a few will be more decorative than functional. If you need more control, like with an updo for example, use hair combs where your larger piece will add style and hold.
2. Create your own silk flowers to add an optional handmade touch to your hair pins. Cut your silk pieces into petal shapes in varying sizes (small, medium and large). You are aiming for uniformity in your petals, but perfection is certainly not necessary.
3. Give the petals have fullness by sewing a gathering stitch in the bottom of each one and knotting it tightly.
4. Build your flower in layers of five to six petals each. Use five small pieces to make a small flower or rows of six with all three sizes to create larger ones, working upward in size from large to small.
5. Arrange the row of petals in a circular fashion with the bottom tips overlapping with one another slightly.
6. Using the same color thread as your fabric, sew a line through the entire group of petals to connect them. Repeat the process with rows of six until you have reached your desired fullness.
7. Use your hot glue gun to apply a fluff of maribou feather, rhinestones or pearl beads in the center of your flower to mask the stitches you made.
8. Weave a strand of thin ribbon back and forth through the teeth of your comb (if you are using one) to create a color dimension and a place to adhere your embellishments. Use a dot of hot glue on each end and gently tuck underneath the comb's edges to finish and secure the ribbon.
9. Affix your handmade flower(s) to a bobby pin, hair pin or comb using a hot glue gun.
10. Add pre-made embellishments of your choice to complement your handmade flowers, or to create your entire hair pin if you do not have experience or access to a sewing machine. Your local craft supply store will have a variety of silk flower options like calla lilies, rosettes and orchids in white and other colors to complement your wedding theme. Wired pearl beads, feathers and maribou make great fillers and add extra dimension to your piece.
