Make a chief hat using construction paper.
A paper chief hat is a charming craft for Thanksgiving, to let little ones get excited for the holiday. The Indian chief style headdress can be made using construction paper to make the wide band and feathers of the hat. Use paper in a variety of Earth colors, like red, orange, yellow and green, to make the rainbow of feathers needed for the project. Consider organizing this project for just before the Thanksgiving dinner, so kids can wear their hats while they eat.
Instructions
1. Cut two strips of tan construction paper, making each about 11 inches by 2 inches. Glue the pieces together at one end, to make one long strip.
2. Wrap the band around the child's head, snipping off the excess paper so the band will fit snugly on the head. Glue the ends together to secure the loop.
3. Cut about a dozen feathers out of different colored construction paper, drawing them with the pencil first. Make the feathers about 8 inches tall and 1 inch wide.
4. Let kids decorate the feathers and the paper band with markers.
5. Glue the feathers to the inside of the band, so the feathers stand up tall above the band when worn as a hat.
