The same glass dishes used to bake pies also make excellent cockatiel baths.
Caring for pet cockatiels requires more than making sure they are fed and watered. Cockatiels produce a fine white powder known as cockatoo dust, which is a combination of dry skin and tiny bits of feather. They preen their feathers both in nature and captivity to remove everyday dirt and dust. However, in nature, the birds also have regular baths in the rain or in shallow, standing water. In captivity, you must provide a means for your cockatiel to bathe. A simple cockatiel bath is easy and inexpensive to make yourself.
Instructions
1. Select a shallow, sturdy bowl that is not more than 2-3 inches deep and suits the size of the space in which your cockatiel will be bathing. Ensure that the bowl is made of a durable material such as clay or ceramic, and that it is wide enough for your bird to stretch our its wings and move freely. Pie plates or saucers work nicely. Wash the dish and mirror thoroughly with soap and water. Dry each with a towel.
2. Place waterproof glue onto the back of a pocket-sized mirror. Press the mirror, reflective side up, onto the middle of the dish. The mirror adds visual interest to the bath for your cockatiel, encouraging it to check out the water and bathe.
3. Set the dish aside overnight, allowing the glue to dry thoroughly.
4. Pour 1/2 to 1 inch of water in the dish. Use room-temperature water in the dish so that your cockatiel does not get burned or become chilled.
5. Place the dish into the desired bath space. Place towels or newspapers around the cage (if bathing inside the cage) or on the exterior surface. Allow your cockatiel to bathe.
6. Empty the birdbath once your cockatiel's bath is finished. Wash the birdbath with soap and water and allow it to dry. Dry the bathing area with a towel and place the bird in a draft-free, warm location.
