Good Reputation For Flamingo Hotel & Casino

The Flamingo Hotel and Casino is one of the oldest properties on the Las Vegas strip, and continues to attract legions of new patrons in Sin City.

History

William Wilkerson purchased 33 acres in 1945 to begin construction on the Flamingo, but when money ran dry, he signed a deal with the Mob. Bugsy Siegel came in and oversaw the casino's construction. At a cost of $6 million, the casino was opened in 1946.

Geography

The Flamingo is located in the heart of the Strip, across from Caesars Palace and near Bellagio and Bally's.

Significance

The casino was one of the first major resorts built on the Strip, and was the forerunner of many yet to come. Wilkerson had the idea to not build windows in the casinos and not put clocks on the walls to keep gamblers occupied at the games of chance, an innovation that is now commonplace.

Size

The Flamingo has grown into a mammoth property, with more than 3,600 hotel rooms, a 77,000-square-foot casino and a pool area that is one of the largest in Las Vegas.

Fun Fact

Both "Viva Las Vegas" and the 1960 version of "Ocean's Eleven" were filmed here.
