If your child needs a chicken costume, whether for Halloween or for a school play, don't spend the money to buy one when you can make one yourself. A child's size costume is something you can easily achieve in an afternoon. All you need to do is take a quick trip to the craft store, find a sewing machine and you're set. You can make several if you are outfitting a whole coop.

1. Lay the t-shirt flat on the table, smoothing out the sleeves. Slide the torso of the leotard into the t-shirt, pulling its sleeves through the shirt's sleeves and lining up the necklines exactly. Smooth out flat both again. Feed the bottom seam of the t-shirt into the sewing machine where it touches the leotard beneath it. Carefully sew the seam to the leotard on the front side and the back side. Be careful that you do not sew the inside of the leotard closed.
2. Pick the costume up off of the table and look at the necklines of the t-shirt and the leotard. You will notice that there is a sizeable gap between the two. Stuff your polyfill between the two necklines and push it downward toward the seam you just made. This will give your chicken a puffy belly. Continue to stuff until you have a uniform layer of polyfill around two inches thick. Then use the sewing machine to stitch the two necklines together.
3. Starting at this neckline, begin wrapping feather boas around the body of the costume. Attach them to the costume as needed with dots of glue from the hot glue gun. You will need about four child-size boas to cover the entire outfit. You can cut the boas or overlap them if you end up with extra.
4. Cut a final boa into two pieces and use one for each arm. Wrap the boa loosely, spiraling it from the shoulder down to the wrist, adding dots of glue as needed. Don't wrap it too tight, since you want your child to be able to move freely.
5. Glue individual feathers onto the baseball cap until it is completely covered. For its crest, cut a comb out of red felt by placing your left palm down on the square and spreading your fingers. Start at the right side of your hand and trace around each finger, stopping when you get to the base of your thumb. Pick up your hand and draw a straight line across the base of the shape you just made. Cut this shape out and glue it to the top of the cap so that one end points toward the bill.
6. For the feet, take one of the rubber gloves and set it in front of you so the fingers are pointed directly away from you. Measure up an inch and a half from the base and draw a circle that is 2 inches in diameter with your compass. Go over it in permanent marker so you can see the circle better. Cut out this hole and make sure it is large enough to accommodate your child's shoe. Adjust its size if needed. Repeat for second glove.
7. Fill the fingers of the glove with polyfill and glue them closed right before the shoe hole. Glue the open end of the glove closed as well and cut off any extra rubber so your child doesn't trip. Insert your child's shoes in their holes right before it's time to get dressed. Finish off the outfit with a pair of yellow tights or stretch pants.
